DOE is a poem of salvation, of sin and of terrible punishment told in blank verse.
The story of Doe, a Haitian Voodoo priest is captured with rich imagery and in compelling rhythms.
The setting is in Charlotte Amalie, St.
Thomas, Virgin Islands where Hartkorn has created a place where the lines between what is good and what is evil, what is real and what is imagined are blurred, as if two separate universes had converged.
A fine blend of image and meaning, a halting movement that enhances the speaker's mood...
the force of the voice...the tragic irony.
Repetition adds a fine, almost otherworldly quality...deeply felt and rooted in the world of experience.
The patterns of imagery are interwoven to powerful effect enhanced by over 30 original sketches executed for this volume by Herbert Hofer, an internationally renowned artist.

From the Inside Flap

"In his fifth book, Doe, Hartkorn turns his considerable narrative skills to an evocative tale of the tropics.
Hartkorn writes confidently, and his perfectly balanced lines echo with mythic resonance.
Image for image, rhythm for rhythm, the poetry builds a man, an atmosphere, a world that will linger in the reader's mind."
