About the Author

Samual Adams Drake was born in Boston Massachusetts in 1833. 
He was educated in the Boston schools and in 1858 he moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, where he was a journalist and merchant until the outbreak of the civil war.
He joined the Kansa militia as captain in 1861, and was promoted brigadier-general in 1863 and colonel of the 17th Kansa volunteers in 1864.
He returned to Boston in 1871 and devoted his time to his literary work.
