People have been hanging ornaments on trees every December for more than 5,000 years.
The first ornaments were selected neither for their charm nor beauty, but rather to attract the gods' attention.
Romans hung the likeness of Bacchus, the god of fertility, on fruit trees to insure a bountiful harvest.
During the dark days of winter, Druid priests decorated oak trees with gilded apples and lighted candles to implore the sun god Odin to bring fertility and light back to Earth.
